Race Week Shakeout Run and Pre-Race Workout
A race-week shakeout is a short easy jog (15–25 minutes) with 3–4 relaxed strides, usually the day before or morning of the race. No tempo, no hills, no fitness tests — just wake the system up.
Race week is where amateurs overtrain their anxiety. The shakeout exists to grease the nervous system, not prove fitness. Do less than you think — then trust the work you already banked.
Neuromuscular wake-up + anxiety management. Zero training stress intended.
15–25 min easy + strides
Legs feel springy, not taxed. If trash, shorten further.
Why this works
Light movement the day before competition maintains coordination without adding residual fatigue. Strides prime elasticity. Extra 'tune-up' intervals mostly add doubt and tiredness.
The session
Shakeout
15–25 min very easy · 3–4 × 20 sec strides at 80% · walk 2 min.
Do not
No tempo, no long run, no new shoes for the whole run, no to-failure core.
Scaling that protects the stimulus
Scale to hit the time domain and intended feel — not to match RX loads at all costs.
20 min very easy · 4 × 20 sec strides @ 80% · walk
12–15 min easy · 3 strides · or walk + mobility if sore
10–12 min walk-jog · skip strides if anxious/injured
Coaching notes
- Legs trash → 12 minutes. Fresh > perfect routine.
- Eat the breakfast you've already tested.
